Beyond the introduction, it is important to me that you understand several things about where I am coming from.
This whole thing is a work in progress.
This has grown and developed immensely since its inception in 2006 and it still has growing to do. I've changed the introduction 7 times. I've removed and replaced "offerings". This is largely because, up 'till now, I've had a lot of trouble defining the central origin of my subject as opposed to the essentially sound ideas I've had that were more a result of this origin. Although it may look like I haven't done much of anything over the last two years, I've never, ever worked so hard in my life. Also, since I am nearly finished with the walk, what's here at the site now is only a small portion of what will be here as I continue to fulfill the web based part of the project. It turns out what develops here will be a result of the walk rather than the walk being a vehicle for the site. I really hope you stay tuned, and join in.
I am not here to record and present the beliefs and perspectives of individuals.
I have come out to talk and listen to people about how we see ourselves, each other, our civilization and our world and how these things relate to one another, the quality of our lives, and our future. But all of our different beliefs and opinions are what so often separate and confound us. It is my intention to inform as many people as I can that I'd like them to contribute their own input here at the site, and this is a portion of the sites hope and purpose. But you should know that for my part I intend to pool together my experience of individual responses and essentially read between the lines, searching for deeper more universal implications and hoping to offer these to all comers for further discussion.
This is not spiritually inclined.
I am spiritually curious and open minded. But I am not what you might call a practitioner of any sort of spirituality and I would not be prescribing my spiritual beliefs to you even if I were. I see human tendencies concerning spirituality to be hugely divisive. If whatever you or I experience here has or takes on a spiritual dimension for us individually, that's wonderful. But I do not consider myself to be, nor do I imagine I ever will be, in a position to dictate spirituality. Moreover, I believe if I was to do so, regardless of my take on it, I would immediately be alienating massive groups of all potential viewers. For me, this is about us, and looking for the origins of the division among us, It's not about some of us and refreshing that division. As I've already implied, I am looking for deeper universal truths here and I now refine this by stating that I am looking for them in what is worldly, and mortal and human.
This is not about a brand of morality.
This is about practicality. I have my own moral creed and it is very important to me. But we have been dictating morality to each other for thousands of years and evidence suggests that this behavior has not and will not serve its highest concievable purpose. As I have stated elsewhere on this site, I believe it is best for all of us to leave, or better yet, make some room for others to come to their own conclusions. However, this project does involve morality in a couple of ways. It aims to show the benefit of questioning our own moral codes: where they come from and what they tend to result in. But this I am framing as practical rather than moral. As I explained above, I am looking for what universally connects us. Practicality is the most basic universal pursuit I have come up with. But some of what seems practical to us in the immediate can actually turn out to be more impractical in the long run. This often develops through a lack of consideration afforded either to others, or in fact, to ourselves. Since so much of what we experience is a result of both how we behave towards others, and the quality of our own self respect, much of what is practical happens to simultaneously be much of what is moral. I actually believe one of the most promising routes to better fulfilling many of our higher moral aspirations is an increased recognition among human beings of how what is practical for us, and what is moral, are related in this way.
This is intentionally free of profit, and will remain so.
I could have simply set out to write a book. But I want to share this with you, not sell it to you. I believe selling it destroys some of it's potential to be successfully shared. My goal is to get some ideas in front of you and to encourage you to consider and discuss those and your own ideas with myself and others. When persons such as myself try to thrust themselves into the public eye offering some big ideas that happen to be attached to their personal profit, this invariably invokes some suspicion. Some of the would be receivers of these ideas end up having doubts as to the motives of the person who is offering them, and this invariably casts doubt upon the worthiness of those ideas as well. I am here because I care about us: you and I and everyone else. I will never pursue any profit through this particular project, or through any novelties such as calendars or any crap like that. I may indeed write a book, or books someday. But I see this body of work and conversational facility as part of trying to give something back to my kind.
This is unconventional
This is not about telling you what you should do or really to get you to do anything. I have come here to offer something relatively new. I have not come out to echo the same stuff we've been hearing all our lives: love one another, respect one another, share and cooperate in harmony. These are what we want, but would be the results of a better world: of deeper understanding. Simply telling people to do these things is like saying "Be other than how you are now." People must perceive a pathway to things such as greater love and respect. They must follow a route that, most importantly, is illuminated by conclusions they themselves have come to. We cannot just pass these behaviors out to be put on like clothing. That's why the method I attempt to engage and promote here is to offer a stimulus rather than to state dictations. The convention of dictation and force is not serving us and from this we can deduce that in order to get better results something different must be done. I only want to lay something different in front of you in a different way, and if I'm able, to engage with any applicable response you might have. My efforts are not an attempt to make you different, but to enable possibility. To enable any possibility that if we encounter each other through this project, either one of us might be as new information for the other and thus a spark of totally new understanding may be kindled or a new branch on our respective paths be revealed. This is the grand potential of talking with one another.
